Wild Sights from the Deck

Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is the nation’s largest water area park! Imagine, 3.2 million acres or water and a treasure trove of scenic coastal islands, fjords, and the home to diverse migrating animals. Hold on tight to your cup of coffee or hot chocolate and plan to spend the day on deck!

Most people experience:

Iceberg Calving: Within Glacier Bay are 12 tidewater glaciers where you will witness the birth of one massive iceberg after another crashing into the frigid waters. Once you have heard this sound, you’ll never forget it.

Marine Life: Humpback whales can be seen heaving their massive 50 ft. and 37 ton body into the air into a spectacular leap called “breaching”. A bit smaller whale, but equally as thrilling are sei, fin, minke, and killer whales. On board naturalists will point these out as well as Steller sea lions, harbor seals, porpoises and the sea comical otters.

Coastal Life: Watch for black bears along the beaches and brown bears fishing when the salmon are spawing, mountain goats, moose, and wolves. And above you, over 200 species of seabirds summer in the region including marbled murrelets, black-legged kittiwakes, a glaucous-winged gulls, and the majestic bald eagle.

Whittier, where trains, ships, and luxury coaches meet

Gateway to Prince William Sound, Whittier lies 65 miles southeast of Anchorage and is one of two major cruise ports. Through a tunnel roadway completed in 2000, the western Prince William Sound community of Whittier is the embarkation point to this marine wilderness.

Built as a WWII port for cargo and troops, Whittier remained active military until 1960. Now this tiny community of 290 people welcomes small and large ships and lots of fishermen. And, yes, it was named for the famous poet and naturalist, John Greenleaf Whittier.
